Re:

I've seen there is a Garmin Touring. Seems nice from the pics but about 170 quid at the cheapest CRC etc.

My brother is after something and finds his iPhone5 just doesn't work well for this sort of thing. Basic satnav touring. Now my Android phone does as the bike part of google maps works well. Just not on his iPhone apparently.

He's London and a roadie now so needs are different to mine. Still like he says he is still a Yorkshireman is spending 200 quid on a cycle computer is stupid given his phone should be able to do it easily.
So any decent iOS bike satnav programs?

Re:

Garmin Edge 500. Bought it because I didn't want mapping functions. It does have a breadcrumb trail type function which is ok but if you want mapping look elsewhere. It is very good for swapping between bikes and the uploading whether it be to Strava or Garmin Connect is great, I found it a really good motivational tool. As for Strava, forget the stereotypes, it has so many functions over and above the trail/road hog image and ultimately (like everything else) its just a tool and it depends on how you use it. I love it, its a mini social app and really keeps me getting out there and I'd say has brought on my biking no end, A+ from me. Back to the Edge thoughif your after a training GPS then this is the one (albeit the Edge 510 now) cadence , hrm and a customisable display.

Have a snoop about here

Re:

I've got the Garmin Edge 200 and the Strava phone app.

I used the Garmin up until recently but now use the phone app on Samsung Galaxy which has a nice big colour screen.
It locks on no bother and battery life is ok. Been out for 5-6 hours and had plenty in reserve.

I found I was becoming obsessed about my GPS during rides and being overly concerned about speed / distance . Now I put my phone in my pocket and enjoy the ride.
