best way to size a chain

I decided after using existing chain method that previous owner had it way too long. I did largest cogs and the equation and they came out about the same.

Shimano user docs use biggest-biggest plus 2 links without bein' fed through rear mech.

ahhhh, i put mine through the mech to size, so would mine skipping in the smallest cogs while being perfectly indexed through the rest of the gears be a typical symptom of a chain that is too long then?
