Best Way to remove anodising ?? Without damaging Ally !!

nah it was defiant , i never took any pics of removing the ano

worth noting its smelly stuff so have the window open

it will make the alloy disappear if left for long enough so dont leave it . i found my sinkfull was done in about half hour but i kept adding things  so it ended up being a whole evening and give it a good rince under the tap to make sure theres none left on it

i used about quarter of a bottle in a sink full and did

a rim
v brakes
chainrings
cranks

Worth remembering then and not to pour the whole bottle in for just a pair of crank arms

Hmmmmm.... Now what else can I bleach !! Ha ha, addictive I bet !!

oven pride, did some on a chain ring and other bits tonight. safer than caustic soda and works perfect. got it from wilko's...

I'd be pretty cautious about doing it inside over a sink, can give off nasty fumes which can burn your lungs.
Whenever I've done bits its been in the garden.

they have a black coating to them , it comes off with water and a rub

i wouldnt polish without starting with at least a 240 . the ano hides a very rough finish to the bare alloy . it would be just cleaning the alloy otherwise as it would have a surface as rough as the moon

Isn't there some kind of chemical for the job ?

I cant remember !! :?

Can anyone help ?

You can't do it without damaging the alloy. Anodising isn't a coating it's a a chemical change to the surface of the alloy. You can remove it but this will mean losing material so it depends on how much fitting tolerance there is on whatever you're removing it from.

oven pride literally only gets rid of the colour, the finish on the ally after looks exactly the same just silver not coloured...

http://www.patentgenius.com/patent/4244792.html

This describes a method for the controlled removal of anodized oxide layers from the surfaces of aluminum and aluminum alloys, without destruction of the metal. The preferred method uses an aqueous solution of oxalic acid and nitric acid as an oxide stripping bath.

This is a complex process for reversing the anodizing process that claims to de oxidise the aluminium oxide surface and turn it back into aluminium or aluminium alloy.

It may be possible to have this done commercially :!:
