Best way to get to York?

I'm planning to travel from Frankfurt to York in June, and I don't see any flights that go directly to York. Having never been to the UK (or Germany for that matter), I'm kind of clueless about how to get around there. Any advice on the best route?

Many thanks in advance!

York is well served by trains from London, National Rail enquiries is the place to go for a ticket (which you must buy in advance, or it will cost you a multiple of the price of a ticket you buy when you want to travel). Or you could rent a car, which might work out cheaper.

If you are happy to drive in the UK, don't mind an older car and can arrange your own insurance I have hired a car from these people. It was much cheaper than renting, and the car worked perfectly.

Failing that, you can get a National express coach. They have a sale on their website every so often and you can get a ticket for £1. Again, book in advance.

Leeds Bradford Airport will be the closest airport (approx 20 miles) The nearest huge airport is at manchester, probably 60 miles or so. Either way both Leeds & Manchester have excellent rail links to york.

There is also a airport in Doncaster, which would be closer than manchester.

Trains from both Doncaster and Manchester will likely be via Leeds any way.

Flight to Newcastle would be easiest. York is around 50 minutes away by car or train- both are available at the airport.

It would probably be easiest to go via Manchester Airport. There a loads of trains that run straight from the airport and call at York. It doesn't take that long either.

Going by Leeds/Bradford or Doncaster will involve getting taxis and buses as well as the train.

I'd second the Newcastle option- mainline trains from N'cle to York......airport to rail, ye can get a taxi, and I even think the metro goes out there.

Newcastle is a good distance further than Leeds, I guess it depends on which is easier to get a flight into.

Manchester is served by flights from the USA (Delta from NY and ATL, US from philly, AA from Chicago, continental from NY), whereas LBA and newcastle aren't directly served. Given sancho's location, probably easiest to get US from phl.

Edit - coming from frankfurt it's not so clear cut, although a quick glance at the two airports websites suggests that newcastle and LBA also don't have flights from frankfurt, whereas there are around 15 flights per day between frankfurt and manchester.

As already mentioned, there's a direct train from manchester airport (follow signs for "the station" in the airport - moving walkways take you most of the way) to york.
