I have been using the bog standard nasty Shimano 6spd that is made out of old bits of abandoned cars and its slipping after about 4 rides - ok these rides have been mud soaked 18 milers but its not really good enough.

What is your long term recommendation. My bikes are used and can get very wet and dirty.

I use french maillard (or Sachs-Maillard) which are very strong. They could be repaired too.
The only problem is to find 32t. It's usually until 28-30t

I use some Suntour too, but the tool for remove them is difficult to be find.

Could you/would you replace the hub with a cassette one, or is there a good reason to stay with a freewheel?

In another thread LGF's been talking about a drum braked hub he has with a freewheel, maybe this is the hub he's referring to and if so replacing it with a cassette version might be pricey :?

I've got a 6 speeds shimano freewheel with a 34t. I owned that with the Touring bike I bought for my girlfriend : It's a 1985 cannondale ST with a shimano 600 groupo. I wanted to use on a MTB but I needed to use the touring rear derailleur. I'm not sure that the old derailleur were compatible
:D
