Until i sort a full time job, i am looking at getting a car sat nav (instead on the phone as a contract), so what is good out there???

If cash is an issue i think the tomtom one takes some beating.

I find navman akward to use. I've experienced a couple of the 50 quid specials and found them frustratingly poor.

Tomtom one will be just over 100 quid so not the cheapest but very easy to use, clear screen and instructions. The bigger screen on the xl version is worth the extra 30 quid if you ask me.

If when you say 'best' you mean 5 and 600 systems then i'm out my depth!

I had a Garmen that worked well. Got a car with built-in sat-nav so got rid of it. BTW Volvo's own sat-nav is truely aweful. It takes me one some weard routes.

I've used Garmins and TomToms, and others, but recently, very impressed with the free maps and nav of Ovi Maps on compatible Nokia handsets.

Free maps for life, and a pretty competent navigation product (includes driving and walking), plus if you have a data plan, traffic info as well as other value add (safety cameras).

Why bother getting one at all ? We all managed without them for years

this will no doubt spark a whole load of getting lost abuse, but...

i loathe sat navs. I like maps and thought.

i do tend to get lost a fair bit mind.

I used to use maps and common sense........but, from a time saving point of view SatNav is so much better.

Non of this spending hours plotting a route the night before, just get in the car, tap tap tap, go. Job done.

Ive only ever had a TomTom. Simple to use. Not too expensive. Works for me.

We did - myself included.

And we can look back all misty-eyed and say wasn't it great.

Hell no - it wasn't - it was rows in the car, stress and tension, when you're driving somewhere you've never been, with a car full, and kids crying, with the ever-so-expected "Are we there yet...".

But as it goes, we all managed with rigid bikes and canti brakes, too. How's that with you - or is it just selective things you object too? Weren't you singing the praises of more modern things like disc brakes and suspension, a while back?
