Best Apps?

Aldiko : IMO easily the best e-reader out there. Has a big library of both free and paid books.

Break the Bricks : one of those old arcade games, but in a modernized version

Drag Racing : Good game if you're a bit of a car nut. Lots of cars, lots of tuning options.

Dropbox : Very handy if you have dropbox on your PC as well.

Google Earth : This one doesn't need an explanation.

Note everything : Makes text notes, audio notes, video notes. Unfortunately it doesn't transfer them to the PC, so you might want to look into Evernote if you want to have the same notes cross-platform.

QR barcode scanner (by Warriors)

Rockplayer Lite : IMO one of the best video players. Plays just about every major movie format.

Solitaire (by Ken Magic) : I'm addicted to this one.

Wifi analyzer (by Farproc) : perfect tool for figuring out if someone else is on the same frequency, or for finding one that's still free. I used this app set my home Wifi to a channel that wasn't used in my immediate area, and it dramatically improved Wifi performance.

What sort of apps? Games? Productivity?

Here's a few that I use...
Dolphin is a really good web browser
Endomondo Pro and Google Tracks for logging rides
Free advanced task killer for stopping apps running in the background (more useful than it sounds)
Weather Channel
Wikitude and Google Skymap for showing off (Wikitude is an augmented reality version of wikipedia - you point the camera at something interesting like a castle for example and it has a link on screen telling you all about it. Google Sky Map shows you all the constellations by pointing at them in real time)
Sky+ - If you've got sky obviously

Games - Doodlebug, Flick Golf, Great Little War Game, Glow Hockey etc

There's loads to chose from and most have a limited free version, if they're not free to begin with, so you can try stuff out...

Ross,

As former head admin of the HTC Desire forum, I have to strongly disagree with this one.
Android 2.2 (and anything above it) has a built-in task manager which is far superior to ATK. It logs how the phone is used and selectively kills tasks to optimize performance and battery life.

All ATK does is kill apps, which then reboot (using the processor and eating the battery). This temporarily frees up memory, but Android is designed to run with full memory. It's nothing like Windows.
ATK's work also corrupts the phone's own log, which makes it harder for the built-in task manager to do its work properly.

I'd suggest removing ATK and giving the phone about 2 weeks to sort itself out. Several forum members of mine did that, and all of them noticed an increase in performance and battery life.

FYI, here's the main thread about app killers and power consumption. For some reason it won't work as a link, so I'll put the URL as code.

Raging-Bulls I've used it since 1.6 on my old Magic, where it was much more effective, I just got used to having it! I'll give that a go, thanks for the advice!

On 1.5, 1.6 and 2.1 it was much more effective indeed, but on 2.2 or higher you're better off without it.

Keep in mind that battery life will be dire in the first days after uninstalling it. That's because the built-in task manager doesn't have correct info on how the apps try to behave without ATK on the phone. However you should see an improvement pretty quickly.

Sorry for hijacking the thread a bit Harryburgundy, but IMO this issue needed to be cleared out before people started downloading task killers.
I made the same mistake myself and was happy with the phone, but it became so much better once I uninstalled ATK.

Satnav?

I use Google Maps, and find the navigation function on that to be sufficient. Then again I barely ever use Satnav myself, probably because I only ride a bicycle.

There are loads of apps on the Android Market, so you may need to try some diffferent ones until you find the one that suits you best for its specific function.
