I am after a new bottom bracket for my 94 Kilauea single speed. Can anyone recommend a good one? I have seen quite a few new FSA square taper ones, are they any good or should I stick with Shimano XT/XTR?

Cheers,

Trevor.

For the cost, a Shimano XT Square Taper is perfect. Basically everlasting and reliable. You'll just have to find one though.....

I am watching a NOS XT one on the bay at the moment but I have also seen a new FSA Ultimax Ti one, is one better than the other or is Shimano just longer lasting, more durable?

Trevor.

The FSA has replaceable bearings, and it's quite nicely made, but an Ultimax Ti unit I used had the most flex I've ever experienced in a bottom bracket. The cranks had about 4mm of clearance with the chainstays when the bike was in the workstand. When I rode the bike, the ends of the cranks were taking paint off the frame - that's how much flex there was. I later read a review in a French cycling magazine where the FSA was the lightest, but also the most flexible on test.

If you're light, you could try the FSA. If not, a UN71/72 is always a safe choice. TA also make very nice units, also with replaceable bearings.

Thanks for the advice guys especially over the FSA Ultimax. The Phil Wood stuff looks beautiful but would be knocking on the door of £100 with fitting tools so I think I will stick with Uncle Shimano for now, got my eye on a cheap NOS UN-72.

Trevor.
