Olly i would like to begin by saying that I in no way mean any offence, it is clear you have the retrobike bug and are well on your way to divorce and destitution along with the rest of us 8) 8) 8) 8)

however and this is just my opinion which nobody takes any notice of anyway

have you ever heard the term "polishing a turd" it doesnt matter how much you polish a turd, it will always be a turd, albeit a shiney one.

my point being you are gathering together some lovely quality bits, but that frame is a turd, it will always be a turd in my opinion it looks like a turd.

so in my lovely most honest no offence meant type way i think the next part you buy should be a nice quality frame.

Im sure the bike rides very nicely, but you hang them bits on a decent frame and you will wonder how or why you ever sat on that thing.

Im not being snobbish or owt, i just keep looking at the pictures and feeling the whole bike is being let down by the frame and the chainset.

build it back to original and use it as a pub station hack bike in the hope it will be stolen or broken in the near future.

then find a lovely frame and build a lovely bike, you clearly have a good eye and are adept at getting quality bargans too

just my thoughts on the matter

right im off to ride my Tesco BSO, with full xtr gruppo and carbon kit

i know what you mean, its not the best frame in the world.

the main reason behind this is as a test bed while i await my new frames arrival.

got a 97/98 saracen terra trax coming,
thats the reason behind most of the purple bits.

i also have a shimano deore xt crankset, xt front mech, lx rear, xt shifters, dia compe v-brakes, clubroost bars, as well as the wheels and bits from the trek going on to it.

Hey man,

I think yours is a 95, not a 94..

why not stick with a trek frame? you can get a 930 - 970 frame on ebay for like $25 any day of the week..still heavy but at least they have proper rear dropouts and are made in the USA instead of Taiwan..

Here is one now:

Olly, welcome to the lions den.

Do what you want, they're your bikes.

Depends what you want to achieve. A Trek 800 will only ever be a Trek 800 - dont matter if you festoon it with xtr or boutique CNC crap.

I happen to believe that there is a place in the retro canon for bikes like this. I would suggest that that place is probably restored to exact makers spec. A least then you have an impressively original low end bike.

Bikes like this, whilst not icons, often elicit affectionate recognition. When did you last see an immaculate 1.6l Sierra? Same principle as your bike.

Have fun with your bikes/builds. Some of the snippiest posters on here are also some of the most knowledgeable. Your post bought out two of them in short order. For that, if nothing else, kudos.

my new frame arrived yesterday, so the trek is now just a frame hanging on shed wall.

Just need to decide what to do with the trek, its going to carboot on sunday, dont know wether to sell as a frame or build up as a full bike.
