Bar width

Just curious as to the views on optimum, rather than period correct, bar width.

I've started cutting down my bars to as little as 520mm if I'm not using bar ends, whereas the uncut width on my trusty Tufftrax is about 590mm. In both cases the controls are nearly exactly the same distance apart, cos that's where I like them.

How about you?

Cheers
Steven

Recently came of my bike after 15+years
510mm bars with bar ends, and they felt wider than my other one's that came off my other bike with 520mm with no bar ends.

Different sized frame and position on the bike just makes them feel different.

Also depends how you like to ride, how wide your shoulders are etc.

I try to aim for somewhere between 550 and 570mm anything else is just too bleedin' wide :x I put some new bars on my Klein on the weekend @ 620mm and I couldn't steer the damn thing -

BITD I used to run stupidly narrow bars, like under 500mm but that's how I liked it then, gave me the control I needed... Now I'm older I like a little more comfort and all that cr4p

Problem is, I hate cutting bars, I'm sure I can hear them screaming like Lobsters in boiling water

I suppose narrow bars 'look retro', but obviously wide bars are better for riding and that's what counts for me. I have a 63.5 Air Alloy low riser on my Explosif, and I've bought a 66 Air Alloy DH riser for the 94 Explosif I'm building. I very much doubt whether I shall ever use narrow or flat bars again.

Ah yeah, I should've pointed out I was on about flat bars - I don't do risers :P don't like 'em...

28" race face diablous dh's on my proflex. best bars i've ever ridden. polar opposite on my scott. pace renthals, feel about half the width
