Bar Tape by the Metre?

Back in the day I used to have a big pack of bar tape, I think there was about twenty metres in the pack. I recall that it cost about twice as much as a pack or bar tape complete with plugs and finishing tape. Since I hardly ever use the plugs and never ever use the finishing tape they're a waste of money. And there's also the two lengths of offcut you end up with that are good for nothing.

Can you still buy bar tape this way?

Not sure about 'plastic' bar tape but I've been buying cloth tape in Black, White, Red, Blue and Green from Dunholme Mills by the metre. A bit thinner than the 'real' stuff but seems to be OK in use. Obviously it's not 'sticky backed' but this isn't a problem to me.

It's a thought. I like my bar tape cushioned, but then my arty crafty wife could probably suggest something soft to put under the cloth tape.
