Bar ends on riser stem aesthetic - discuss

I can't ride without them either, and yes i have some stubby ones on risers. Not that bothered about the " that looks sh£t" brigade. Its what works for me.

In my opinion, a cross-country bike with a real xc geometry must have barends. Sure it´s a bit of an old-school item, but if you raced or just ride with them, you can´t imagine a perfect Xc bike without them.

Riser bars and barends don´t mix, and if i had an 15 degree riser stem i would still put the barends in a flat position.

Like Jango said, the one that make´s your gravity center go forward, but keep´s you confortable on the bike.

My full suspended XC has a riser bar, and a more confortable riding position, but my front sus. Seven has barends mounted on a 0º stem with flat bars...

Mental note for anyone racing against these chaps, on the start line get your multi tool out and take their bar ends off, thus reducing them to walking their bikes

If you don't ride anything technical bar in my experience bar ends have their purpose, however for technical stuff why any would want to make narrow flat bars effectively narrower by forcing your hands closer together (dependent of bar end type) is beyond me.

On the few occasions I rode with bar ends I also found they grabbed the passing greenery rather too consistently for my liking.

So in summary bar ends are best positioned pointing straight down while hanging on a nail in the shed ;)

Bar-ends should be at an angle that is comfortable, just so happens that's about the same as a flat stem

They should however never be fitted to risers...that's just all wrong.

I agree. On most pro bikes they wind up level or slightly down from parallel to the ground. This is the way the experts at MBA suggested installing them back in the early 90's. Or as most BMXer's would size a bar 1 to 1-1/2" below your navel to maximize when pulling up, hence climbing on a mountain bike. If a person is that uncomfortable that they need additional hand positions with a riser stem I guess I'd rather have them add barends than stop biking and take up riding their couch.

with you Heathy. Plus as I have mentioned many times before, some of us need riser stems amd riser bars because of our height and if youwant bar ends too well they have to go together. And don't say get a bigger bike, I'm already riding a 22"!! I have tried long steerers with spacers with some success, but again there's only so far you can go. My steerers generalkly have to be 260mm for this to be effective.

Bar ends are there for functionality, not looks. I have always used bar ends, and always had them set up flat (level with the ground), despite this not following the rise of the stem.

I have tried L bend bar-ends BITD, but much prefer stubbies. L's are too cumbersome.

I find I cant climb out of the saddle as effectively without bar ends; especially short, sharp bursts.

:D I do like treads like this. Good start to the day reading your comments

All aspects of my bikes are chosen for their function, but it's nice if they look good too

I think stubbie bar ends on an XC bike with flat bar and stem can look great. Outside of this convention it is more difficult to obtain a good 'look' while achieving a comfortable riding position. I'm certainly gratefull i'm not in the position of needing a riser stem, riser bar and bar ends

Yea, totally agree with you on this.

I HATE the way new bikes have gone. My '07 Avalanche arrived with such a cruiser set up. I've had to wind the Rock Shox U-Turn down from 5 inches to about 2.5/3 inches of travel, take off the high rise stem and replace with a flat Kore one, and finally ditch the riser bar for a nice flat one!! I'm now just looking for some black stubbies to complete the set up,
