Banana - How to install a current style mech hanger?

Hey gurus :)

Quick question.

Does anyone know what I need to buy in order to install a current style mech on this old banana frame?

I'm not sure of the terminology of what it is I am looking for to convert this to accept a new style mech, I just have a threadless hole in my frame :?

Cheers in advance :)

Re: I have one of these hangars....

This post caught my attention....I used one the adaptor hangars suggested in my 1952 "Retro-Contemporary" Gillott build earlier this year.

I have been having a significant number of problems with the rear wheel slipping out from the rear right clamp and rubbing up on the left chainstay under power since my Gillott build. In fact it's the last major niggle I have after piling around 1000 miles on her since rebuild. 500 miles of those were last month!

But it did get damned irritating. Usually slipping out about once every 1 or 2 rides. Usually anyplace I put more power down than my norm. traffic lights, sprinting out of the saddle up hills etc etc.

Eventually out of frustration I took a dremel to the derailleur hanger and keyyed the mating surface. The hope was it would facilitate a more effective clamp between wheel and bike.

The results were promising. I would say it reduced my rear weel dropout problem to 20% of where it used to be. It still occurs though. Looking at these cheap (pressed) hangars the mating surface is anything but flat and lacks a keyed surace for the spindle ends to clamp onto.. No wonder the wheel slips out.

I have recently ordered a slightly different variation of the same...a bit pricier. See below comparison photo

Here's a picture that illustrates what I am talking about...

So, I'm buying the revised adaptor and am going to monitor the situation... after it arrives and I fit it.
I'm pretty sure this is a major part of the problem in using the "cheap" part. But Building 2015 parts onto a 1952 frame does have many challenges!!!!

Any advice given relating to my particular problem gratefully received. I accept I may be barking up the wrong tree....but we'll see after I change the part.

Anyways.....good luck with the hangar.

p.s. I didnt have enough room for the fitting clamp given my tight clearances between sprocket and dropout so drilled and tapped the frame to accomodate the hangar.

What sort of QR are you using, the stock response to slipping quick release wheel axles is to get a shimano QR........ (or Campag at a pinch)

(Serrating the surface will work as well. Or many punch holes.)

Thanks a lot for that info Sand_Dune appreciate the pics also :)

I'll give a full and detailed report on how mine goes and share what I find too.

Re:

Apologies, this thread is taking a bit of a detour!

Sand Dune - are they Ambrosio Zenith / Formula hubs? I've had real problems using those hubs with horizontal dropouts. The skewers that came with them were awful, but even after replacing with proper skewers, they were still prone to slipping. Other hubs in the same frame, no problem.
