Iirc the average life expectancy for ex TDF riders 20 or so years ago, when the article appeared, was as low as 58 :shock: The lowest for all athletes tabulated. It's well know all animals have an approx finite number of heartbeats, so the gruelling nature of the sport and the chemical abuse must take it toll.
It seems like the average modern Mountainbiker is not as fit or as quick as we were bitd. I play golf too and trails cross the course in many places. I see so many young guys mostly pushing their rigs across he trails when there is even a slight incline and it's not to avoid getting hit by a golf ball
I often feel like shouting ride the frikin bike dude.
The modern focus on jumpin bigger and bigger jumps on 30lb rigs is the antithesis of riding 20 yrs ago. We enjoyed riding natural trails, climbing as well as descending and the fitness was a massive part of it. It's a shame I could never get a race programme going bitd. I always had to work at weekends working in the darn trade.
