ATTENTION: A Middle Aged Heart??

Re:

Iirc the average life expectancy for ex TDF riders 20 or so years ago, when the article appeared, was as low as 58 :shock: The lowest for all athletes tabulated. It's well know all animals have an approx finite number of heartbeats, so the gruelling nature of the sport and the chemical abuse must take it toll.

It seems like the average modern Mountainbiker is not as fit or as quick as we were bitd. I play golf too and trails cross the course in many places. I see so many young guys mostly pushing their rigs across he trails when there is even a slight incline and it's not to avoid getting hit by a golf ball :lol: I often feel like shouting ride the frikin bike dude.

The modern focus on jumpin bigger and bigger jumps on 30lb rigs is the antithesis of riding 20 yrs ago. We enjoyed riding natural trails, climbing as well as descending and the fitness was a massive part of it. It's a shame I could never get a race programme going bitd. I always had to work at weekends working in the darn trade.

As I am touching seventy I have now reached the age when frankly I dont really care.SOMETHING is going to kill me in the next few years ( or I end up a miserable old bugger in a home )so I just go out and live. (it what life is for dont you know )So in summer its around 150 hilly miles a week and three weight training sessions for the bits the bike cant reach. I find if I dont do the weights then the muscles just weaken too much and I end up no good for anything.If I was younger like you chaps I would probably worry but then I would ride less and lose fitness and probably end up with a heart attack.A friend of mine over the road from me is nearly eighty.Two years back he went to Poland for the world fell running Championships.Got silver medal in his age group.I doubt he worries either

Re:

Had Atrial Fibrillation about 2 1/2 years ago . Life time of sport etc . Had all the checks . During AF knackered after 20 miles. On warffarin and beta blockers prior to having cardio version. {they stop your heart and start it again }
Doctor goes round the recovery room telling most to get more excerise etc . Gets to me and says do not over do it . :? :?

Away 3 days later taking things steady covered 50 mile with no issues . Many long tours since .

I keep an eye on my heart rate and BP which are both still low / normal for a fit person .
This makes for interesting reading
