are these fixable ??

just started to refurbish my old '91 orange prestige when i came across a couple of things that have got my stomach turning :?

article A) a crack /hole in the seat tube around the area the front mech sits

Article B) a hairline crack at the rear dropouts (runs along the seam of the tube)

now the BIG question are these fixable ?

They are with new tubes!

Think MonsterFat (forum member on here) has experience with getting a section replaced on the seat tube of his old fat.

Not so sure on the stays though.

Costly in any case...

Prestige.

I've got a 91 Prestige frame which has corrosion very similar to yours on the seat tube. I've been using it on the road for about 4 weeks with an extremely long seatpost(made from 2 posts welded togther)slid down into the seat tube as far as it will go for extra stiffness. Seems to be surviving although i'm not holding my breath. I'm not sure about tube repairs,I think once they have gone they are never the same. I would imagine that the cost to repair would be more than the frame is worth.So unless the frame has some sentimental value i'd look for a new frame.

frame has alot of sentimental value, gifted to me by my mums ex boyfriend when i was but a young 14year old lad.

been with me through thick & thin been used and dare i say a little abused (i was young).

the crack on the rear stay doesnt appear that bad and would most likely not get any worse.

would it be possible to say weld a band around seat tube ?

i know it wouldnt exactly be pretty and it would increase the diameter of the seat tube around where the front mech is. ( but then front mechs come in a variety of diameters)

Being triple butted Prestige tubes are very thin/fragile at the centre of the tube between 2 welded points. The problem will be getting the new tube to weld to the old without blowing holes in the old tube. I'm sure it could be done by a specialist, I mostly make bridges and massive tidal gates so i'm at the other end of the welding spectrum. If you like I can get some feedback from the lads in work who do lighter stuff? Pm me in couple of days and remind me,I have a brain like a seive!

The guy is a legend. He also runs frame building courses (I'd go on one if I could afford it) so if all else fails you could always build another one yourself.

I have a stumpjumper with a similar issue and took it to local welder , who said that he would cut it clean , then re weld it and add a sleeve .

he said it wont be perfect but will be cheapest option .
