heres mine & some trees

I've ridden the 26er and 29er, but never owned one.
The front end is a bit too long for me and a few other geometry things that didn't suit me.

But they're cheap. Especially when On-One has a blowout sale, they can be down to £99 new.

You might pick up something on Ebay for the same money, but you can't really complain when they're 1/4 or 1/10 the cost of other frames.

I've got a Pompino - just set it up as a CX bike, and I love it in all it's guises.

Very comfy ride, does seem to have that steel 'zing'. Handles very well off-road (I'm faster on this round the Haldon Red Run, than on my MTB)

+ it was very good value - got it 2nd hand for 200 smackers all in (and that included carbon forks and a Schmidt dynamo front wheel!) Though I have spent a bit more on it since - including 65 quid on a White Industries freewheel

May not be retro, but definately retro-inspired I'd say.

I had one, and didn't like it.

Although I am prepared to say that is down to my not doing the kind of riding it was designed for very often.

Still, for the secondhand value of an Inbred you can get something much, much better if you are prepared to buy an older machine.

I bought Chris' Inbred

I have to say that I love it.

Horses for courses I suppose.

This thread is getting to me, mustn't buy an On-One, cash needed for other stuff, mustn't buy an On-One Scandal 26er, must resist....................................................................................................

I think their whole philosiphy is sound so I'm building one to try for myself, with 29" wheels, singlespeed and rigid forks. I'll let you know how it turns out! Fantastic value for money too, I bought my frame on sale for just £99 (a second hand one went on eBay last week for £106...) and they're really helpful when you need advice :D

I haven't ridden one so can't comment on the captin pugwash handling, however a friend of mine bought one before xmas the one with no paint, and after 2 weeks of riding found the BB was loose. After a refit the lbs found rust in there
Personally, i would be a bit worried.

Its been a while...

As the owner of two 'On-Ones' I feel pretty well placed to have an opinion here. Bike #1 is an early Inbred slot drop out singlespeed, fully rigid. Bike #2 is an '09 456, 120mm forks.

They're both great bikes, I've completed the HONC on the Inbred in perfect comfort which is a pretty good trial for an XC bike. The forks on the 456 are 100-120mm adjustable and with a little tweaking of travel, the bike is amazingly versatile. I've always found it to be very stable and confidence inspiring on descents and it climbs better than lots of other bikes I've ridden. My riding buddies said that I was noticably quicker on the 456 than I was on my previous bike... that says it all. The inbred, despite its age (its pre-disc mount) and reputation, still has all its original paint :D

The bikes pose many people a problem because they are a 'different' fit to many other bikes out there. Follow the companys guidelines about stem length and bike sizing/set up and you'll have a cracking bike. Ignore it and you'll hate them.

I would also add that when I received my 456 I got the bottom bracket and head tube 'chased and faced' by the pros at my LBS and I put some rustproofing through the frame before building it. Even factoring that in, the frame still cost less than £175.

I have no hesitiation in saying that my Inbred and 456 are great bikes, but then I took the time to set them up right and have adapted my riding style to get the best out of them.

I'm watching the development of the carbon 456 with interest and will be seriously considering getting one. If it rides with the versatility and ability of a steel 456 but weighs a pound or so less, its going to be a monster!
