Are all rides suitable for Retros?

On a rigid your slower unless your a mtb god but as you'll be spending so much time picking the right line as opposed to any line you like you'll be too involved to notice the reduced pace.

I've turned up at CyB with my retro bikes usually get one of two positive reactions, misty eyed and reminiscence, or boggled mind as I've just passed them on a 'dinosaur' . I will say I always have them shod in new rubber (fire xc pro) except 1 mongrel bike that I keep aside for really gloopy conditions, Panaracer Spike have never been beaten.

I assume there are negative comments but I just never listen to them

You still have to push them up hills
And I find modern bouncy bikes harder to push

Unlike a rigid single speed that can be carried

Bang on IMO.

Some great replies and great advice thanks.

The Sutton Bank one grabbed my interest as we like to Caravan up that way and Ive done a few road rides on my new road bike in that area, but nothing off-road yet, will look into that next March when caravan season reopens :)

Cheers

Re:

From sutton bank, you can cycle to easingwold, a proper marked out cycle route. from sutton bank carpark, cross the road and go towards helmsley for 200yrds, you will see a blue sign for easingwold. Probably a drag to climb back up though! You don't use the road, it's other quiet side roads.

You could do the opposite i suppose, free parking in easingwold too and various facilities, bogs, cash machines etc...

Thanks, I may have passed the sign on my road rides, will have a look next year.
Some of the side roads up there are lovelly for road rides between Helmsley and Sutton Bank. Now I know there are some MTB trails too thats just great :)

Re:

Give me a shout when your up there , we regularly caravan in that area too and I usually take the bike , the Sutton Bank red is no problem on retro but there is one steep rocky downhill bridleway bit you have to be careful on (modern or retro).
Modern is generally comfier for old arthritic people, my wrists and back wouldn't cope with narrow bars , stretched out position and no front sus .
