Anything historically interesting on your local ride?.....

will have to bear this thread in mind for future updates.

we have Julian's Bower, a 13th century turf maze

loads of abandoned ww2 airfields

ermine street runs very close to my house so loads of rides feature a stint on there

There are some 17th century gallows that were errected outside Barnetby under the order of James 1 as a warning to two local families wh'd been feuding for 300 years.

there must be more

Thanks for the replies chaps....I guess this will run a while but I'm interested in some pics when your out......the roman stuff, ermine street etc is fascinating, as is the civil war and bronze age stuff too....the school sounds interesting Dave.......get some pics up!....

Well I live near* Hull, it got shat on during the WWII http://www.hullblitz.org/
95% of it's building went or damaged and it's still not really recovered

Oddly don't think I have any pictures of Hull out on my Rides but will remember to get one next time there is a 'good' view

Oh railways, got some old tunnels (Chrisv40 can fill you in on the History)

Civil Wars (1642?), sure we where part of the start of that, I live where something happened.

Other history, I have pictures of what was the longest single span suspension bridge (and probably still is one of the most sophisticated due to it's location)

Here's one
A signpost to Wetwang, where Richard Whiteley was Mayor until he died.

Promise I'll try and snap some more interesting history, but most of it is just ignored around here.

*near is very important.

Yep we've loads of disused railways for anyone who's interested in all that including the best bits of the Hull & Barnsley, the last main line Victorian line to be built and reputedly the most expensive £ per mile.
Ben has some nice pics from a couple of weeks ago I think?

The legendary highwayman Dick Turpin was allegedly finally tracked down and arrested at the Green Dragon in Welton, the village I was born in and were a lot of our regional rides start from. His horse Black Bess is supposedly buried by the road that we ride out of Welton on.

Approx 4 miles from the village i lived in until recently is the tree under which the Magna Carta was supposedly signed

http://www.webmesh.co.uk/magnayew/magnayew.htm

Also, Viginia Water lakes have an interesting selection of sights, some Roman columns imported from Libya over 100 years ago and a full height native american totem pole(!).

Bagshot common also has a few WWII pill boxes scattered around it.

Oh, and on a recent run down 'the long walk' at Windsor Castle, The Queen herself drove right past me in her Jag (actually on the pathway) with Phillip riding shotgun!.
Surely the most significant historical relics right there? :)

We have a bombhole section of trails In Leigh Woods in Bristol called " Springtime for Hitler " ( after the Mel Brooks comedy song ). Few people know they're ACTUAL bomb holes. During the war, the Air Raid Patrol and Camoflage Regiment ( there was actually a regiment called the Camoflage Regiment ) used lights to illuminate the woods and pretend to be Clifton village; it worked and the village ( containing the TOP SECRET headquarters of the BBC ) was saved and we got some cool trails!.

Brownsea Island, in Poole Harbour, was used as a decoy in a similar way.
It was set up with lights and small fires to look like the cordite factory at Holton Heath, and took a good few bombs for its efforts 8)
