Anything historically interesting on your local ride?.....

As well as having a strange interest in bicycles i am a bit of a nerd for english history, and i try and wind local historical sites into my rides where i can.....I will document some from todays ride below.....where do your rides take you?......



this picture is at the battlefield site at Bosworth, where Henry tudor defeated Richard III in 1485......about 8 miles from my house.....

on the way i pass this gibbet post....it reminds me every time i enter the village not to bother the local girls too much.....

Plenty of historical stuff near me, but I'm only really interested in WW2 history so thats the only pics I Have.

This is a memorial to the WW2 airfields of the New Forest, and a plaque commemorating a Medal of Honour won by a US pilot while on a bombing raid..

On my local loop is Tempsford airfield, the base from which the SOE flew agents into occupied France during WW2.

Our local RB group rides take place at Rowney Warren - Chicksands. This was the rabbitt warren for Chicksands priory.

Crikey. Quite a bit to report within a relatively small space; even the daily commute takes me past some Bronze Age barrows, and ends at England's oldest continually operational school.

Other than that, regular road rides pass a couple of well-preserved 13th Century churches, whilst one of my new off-road routes is over bridleways that used to be Roman roads.

lots of civil war stuff near me including Cromwell's birth place and school

also plenty of WWII airfields nearby

plenty of railway history too if you're into that sort of thing...
