Anyone using hide your isp services?

I'm not sure what the sites position is on this so I'm not expecting too many replies but the enquiry is nothing to do with use on this site.

Since moving to the u.s. and using the same settings I've always used I find more and more that some sites are using isp locators and I'm getting localised advertising wether I want it or not.

Add to that recently someone in another forum told me they could trace where I live and although not to the actual address they did tell me my home town and provider.

I'm not one of these 'they are all tracking us man" paranoids but I do take umbridge that any tom dick or harry can trace my isp and tell me where I live and some companies can invade my private space without my consent.

So not being tech savy what can I do about it?

Well I either use DNS ghost or in the past I've used a paid for service like Swiss-VPN to hide my nerfarious shennanigans.

Without something like this I can quite easily locate you within say a 20 metre radius of you home location let alone your ISP details.

In many ways I not bothered because if people want to turn upto my door and announce to a 6ft 3 18 stone phill mitchell look alike that they have been stalking me then I wish them good fortune although I can save them time and say I live in sturgis south dakota.

I'm not doing anything naughty or anything I shouldn't be doing on the internet BUT the bit that bugs me is that I haven't given permission so see it as taking the piss and that and that only drives my..is there a way to protect my privacy other than never using the internet

I'm not sure what a dns ghost is such is my non previous need or tech ability so will go and look one up , as to swiss vpn..i thought that was a brand of undewear

Basically DNS ghost changes the "external" IP address that other people see so when they try to backtrack your address it ends up going to Korea or someplace similar.

Swiss Vpn is a service that you "connect" too , exactly the same as using a VPN to connect to work so when your connected your using their internet address not yours plus it also encrypts the traffic between you and them.

Cool..I think...I've only just got used to laptops , I enjoy being a luddite

I will have to read more

Slight edit..I understand why forum owners/admins/and mods can trace you because they will have your ip/isp but how does an ordinary member do that in a forum?

this is something that interests me also. that and what kind of 'digital foot print' i am leaving behind.

i'm not a complete novice with tech, but when it comes to these sorts of things, i really don't know where to start....

the internet seemed to come up too big too soon!

Completely with twain and sylus here, my footprint.

I did try with a program (cant remember name) when i was using utorrent but it keep popping up all the time and seemed to run slower with it.

Id want something that i could install and completely forget about. Something that wont interfere etc.

The problem you were probably having there was the program was probably bouncing you from your location to another server somewhere else in the world , so this takes longer to route the traffic so to speak.

If you can manage to spoof an ISP from Antarctica that would be awesome. Nothing but refrigerator ads!
