I'm doing the London to Brighton to a) raise money for charity and b) to actually ride one of my retrobikes (a GT Team RTS with I'm sad to say the current flavour XTR groupset on it, but in my defence I have another one with older XTR, and my Amplifier will be all m900).

Trouble is, I cycle every day to work and clock up about 16-18 miles a day, but not all in one sitting, so I need to get myself padded and comfy for the 50+ miles I'll be doing in one go.

Can anyone recommend a comfy and padded short that will go the distance, and one that I can buy pretty soon to break in before the 20th?

Whilst the answer may not be retro (and if I've posted in the wrong place, apologies in advance), I'm not averse to some old shorts if they come highly recommended and I can lay my hands on them easily and quickly.

Cheers

Ian

Not come across ccuk before, I'll check them out.

Thanks

Any other contenders? I was looking at mavic shorts but hell they are pricy! I also struggle with size. Is a 34 inch waist considered medium or large in cycle gear these days (tbh I'm a 33 which is annoying as it sits in the middle).

34 is medium, but beware of especially endura's sizing- medium shorts from them were huge on me..........yer probably best to err on the smaller side- they can stretch up to fit, but loose fitting is a pain- snags on the saddle and stuff.

If you have an Aldi near you, pop in and see if they have any shorts left that will fit you. Mine has about 3 pairs of small (28-30) but nothing else.
Might be in luck and not too expensive.

Else Endura/Altura are all pretty similar and 40miles should be nothing for them.

The seats going to be what makes or breaks it for you.
I can ride 25 miles offroad now on a flite with no padding and my butt only aches a little, so should be fine for you as I've not put that many miles in to toughen up my buttock/bone bit
But I can only ride around the corner on a Kona lite saddle thing and I've pain every where

It's the saddle not the padding in the short first.

Though I am going to get some shorts to make it really comfy like the old days.

Mid range stuff , I'd look at Pearl Izumi, Specialized body geometry and I have heard Castelli are good(had a set of tight years ago and they were fine). TBH I'm kinda nonplussed with the latest Endura stuff, build quality ain't what it used to be.

Assos make the best shorts.

But they don't come cheap - as once you've owned a pair there's no going back.

Cheers for all your help/suggestions, looks like I'll be spending a few hours online tonight searching for the best price shorts.
