Anyone into classic cars

We have something in common then @d8mok as I worked for Ford from 2000 to 2018. Wonder if our paths crossed.

I'm currently falling down a 911SC shaped rabbit hole as I plan a "birth year" car purchase. Passed one up for 12k about ten years ago. Idiot.

2002 to 2021 for me so similar times. When I say Ford I mean at a dealer level rather than manufacturer.

It was a great era to work for Ford. Now I’m not so sure as the product is limited now.

I was at Dunton main site from 1990-2001, and then 2007-2012. Hiatus was being part of the Visteon schism. Second stint was in powertrain controls, but had a lot of interaction with the transit electrical team in the newer wing of the main building.

Aaah visteon…

I did spells at Southampton, Daventry, Warley, Dunton and Dagenham. I was Dunton in 2007/8 and again around 2017 with PTME

Happier times in retrospect than they probably were. Great company to work for but beyond arrogant and no surprise they’ll be little than a national sales company reasonably soon :(

Sounds like you did the grand tour, only missed out on Bridgend!

I was always Dunton based, though visited Southampton, Warley, Dagenham in the UK, along with Genk, Merkenich, Neihl and various sites in Dearborn/Detroit on trips.

I think they found them selves trapped with the upper end pushing down (BMW/Mercedes/Audi) moving into C & B class cars and the far east pushing up (Kia/Hiyundai/etc) matching them for everything but price where they were beating them.

I suspect there will be even more pressure from China, though I expect some serious consolidation in number of manufacturers there over the next 2-5 years.

Throughout the 80’s and early 90’s my wife had company cars. First was the Escort xr3i in red, then the renault 5 turbo in pearlescent white, then a white astra gte in white, follwed by the golf mk3 gti in red. She would run each for 3 years after which i would buy from the company at a discounted price. We were in our twenties and therefore a right yuppie couple. All were very reliable, and we sold them on cheaply after about 6 years with well over 100k miles each. The golf gti, although reliable, was by far the biggest rust bucket - at 4 years old there wasn’t a single seam or panel that had not rusted through from the inside out. Large areas of paint simply peeled off.

Children came along and we then ran family cars, which were great for the purpose at the time. In our dotage, now that the children have left home, we have got used to very sedate, value for money diesels.

Rather late in life i took my ‘A category’ motorbike licence a couple of years back. Bought a Royal Enfield classic 500 and promptly wrote it off by riding into oncoming traffic! Decided that was enough motorbiking and have now just bought a Mk 3 Mx5 2l which, i would have to say, i am really enjoying just bimbling about in.
