Anyone got an 8/9 speed cassette and a Vernier guage handy?

Or a Shimano cassette hub handy?

Just wanting to compare the 'length' of the splined part of a cassette hub to my Mavic hub.

If anyone can help I need the width of the splined part of the hub (from inner face that cogs butt up to to outer edge where lockring screws against or the total width of an 8 or 9 speed cassette block from outer face to outer face including all cogs.

So:

 right...inner face of hub to the END OF THE SPLINE =33.5mm
inner face of hub to the OUTER FACE OF THE HUB =35mm
cassette width..8/9..NOT INCLUDING LOCK RING =37mm......sounds fun..?? :?
ps...the lockring does never lock up against the hub, it locks up against the smallest cog squeezing the whole cassette tight on to the hub..there has to be a gap between the lock ring and the hub otherwise it would never secure the cassette.

Typhoon you are a star.

:D

Check about the gap thing - just put that to try and explain my needs.

That confirms what I thought though - Mavic MTB cassette hubs are another 2mm wider at 37mm hence why they supply a spacer washer with the hub.

Not sure why this is - maybe they use the same cassette body as the road hubs? Are these perhaps longer to use a 10 speed road cassette (is that wider?) :?

Ahhh, I'm not a 10 speed user - presuming 10 speed is even thinner cogs/chain/cog spacing than 9 speed to fit in the same width?

  :!: Here's a wild guess; I have a couple of mavic wheel sets, and looking closely at them,on the cassett side of the rear wheel, the spokes pull fairly vertically ie, hardly any 'dish' to them; as a consequence with the chain on the largest, inner cog-this places the chain vv close to the spokes..( if there was more 'dish'..the clearance between the chain and the spoke would be slightly greater..).... so i would guess the spacer goes on first, then the cassette, this then creates a better gap for the chain-spoke relationship when using the inner cog....or am i talking b''''''ocks?
Just cant come up with any other reason for the situation :!:
