I love my current set-up except for one thing:

When the bar is turned to extreme, the bar-end clamp/bolt hits the top-tube. No damage yet but when I crash this thing (I can feel that day coming), there's going to be a nasty dent in my top-tube.

I don't want to change the height of my stem. The bar-ends are 1'st gen Onza Ti. Currently got a bit of copter tape wrapped round the top-tube at the contact points but can't help feeling that there must be a more elegant solution...

Any ideas?

Seriously i think this is quite common, i had a brand new Proflex 852 in the early 90's, only two days old when the bars turned and the brake lever gashed the top tube, friggin sick i was :cry:

Also seen pics of a storm Klein Adroit on here recently with the same damage

Sorry i can't offer a solution though other than raising the bars or removing the bar ends.

The only other thing you can do is tape a bit of pipe insulation around the top tube. My bike just has the dent in the top tube.

You could shorten the cable housing for the rear brake and derailleurs to "stop" the bars earlier.

Otherwise hamster's comment is the more common solution.

This is a common thing on fixies where there are specific protectors made.

Usually aimed at the 'cool' fixed market but just make your own from some padding.

Had this problem myself, the only solution I came up with is getting a stem with a bit more rise, going from 5 to 10 degree, this changed the height of the bars up 10mm, just enough to clear the top tube. The steerer tube was just long enough so could not use spacers.

Thanks for the ideas guys.

As I said, changing stem/hight isn't an option:
-fit is exactly right.
-no steerer length to play with anyway.
-my Ti stem was hideously expensive and I wouldn't swap it!

That foam thing looks like what I need- may just hse a lizardskins headset protector, thinking about it.

Unless I can source some of those rubber covers that Onza shipped with their first gen ti bar-ends. Ugly things mind.

On a side note: didn't want the elastic bands from my crudcatcher to foul my new downtube stickers so have used 3M heavy duty mounting tape. Works a treat and no damage will be done to my frame if I need to remove it! Beats getting a pair of bottle bosses welded in....
