how do spring bars work? are they standard on watches?
i have thrown out a couple of watches as i could get the bars back in, but i didnt know they spring?
The problem with milling an edge on a 12 pt. socket for this application is the tolerances for sockets (especially 1" and up) are comparatively wide open. (one of the jobs we do is recondition forge punches for sockets for one of our customers - a major tool supplier here - recon'd a 2 1/4" forge punch for them yesterday). It may be too sloppy and/or too rounded to get a good purchase on the back. Most watchmakers tooling is made to a tighter tolerances. Let's have a look at the back of the watch to get an idea of what's needed.
I'd agree with FMJ, lots of variation even from some of the alleged quality manufacturers. If Snap on do something worth their salt its sockets and spanners.
Maplin sel a watchmakers wrench complete with all the different bits needed to open just about any watch. Its made by the Indian company Rolson and therefore quite cheap

Hi fella, thnanks for the link but sadly this watch does not fall into the "just about any" category. Had one of those on it & it's big brother - just not enough purchase for this case
