Love that Specialized - nice find 8)

Cheers mate :) its something i've been after for a long time. It was either gonna be the 1988 U-brake model or this the 1989 version. It also had to be in this colour scheme just like in the catalogue, which i used to spend ages looking at as a kid :D Also the thing you don't see from the photos in the catalogue,is that the grey has a purple pearl effect to it,looks pretty cool :)

I've just bought this off eBay a brand new Tioga T-bone stem,so it'll be all systems go when it arrives from America but until then i'll just keep cleaning it. The only other parts i need is some specialized gx-23 rims,if anyone knows where there is decent ones give me shout please.

Re:

So was the bike an eBay purchase as well? Just wondering how the whole import tax thing works - I've avoided the States because of it but had to give in recently for a GT part - so that will be my first tax test........

Yeah i bought it from eBay but the seller told me he wouldn't be responsible for any tax that might occur, which is fair enough. Mine got hit with the tax which was £62,£12 of that was from the post office. I've bought lots of stuff now from America but they've only been small things and never had any tax. I'm guessing, but it must only be from bulky items,i.e frame and forks that you get hit with the import tax. But all in all it depends how rare and how much you really want something,in my case a lot  so i took the rough with the smooth and bought it. Also usually it tells you on eBay,item price, postage then under that import tax.

Re:

I think the whole thing is stupid really, I get that if you can buy something from this country but choose to buy it from outside of UK, you should pay tax.

But items which are second hand and unavailable to purchase from a retailer in UK, shouldn't really be taxed imo.

You're not deliberately defrauding the tax man after all.

HMRC rules of the land

Their website covers it all, it's calculated on value and item type, percentages vary, there is Import Tax to a certain level then Import Duty kicks in too!, and it's calculated INCLUDING the postage cost!

Indeed.

I've only occasionally imported things (not bike related), new, and used an online calculator to factor in the VAT and carrier charge, into the total cost of the item.

Re:

Just had a look on the letter i got and there was an import vat then a clearance fee which took it to the £62. I've bought lots of smaller cheaper parts, like mechs, saddles, chainsets even rims and never had to pay import vat. The thing that's put me off from buying a lot of parts from america is the sometimes really crazy postage costs. With this stumpy it was only £57 insured and tracked postage, which was part of the reason i bought it and the fact i had to have it
I'm laughing to myself here, you wouldn't pay all this money to get a new Hoover sent from America, that would be silly but a 20 odd year old mountain bike that's a different story all together. You can easily convince yourself that spending £300 is the correct thing to do

Retrobikings brilliant :D

Must follow....

Cheers mate, looking at all your stumpys i'm guessing your a big fan of them  you've certainly got a fine collection of them.

The only thing holding the build up is,i need some 36 hole GX-23 rims and a m-732 XT rear mech.
