Another bike - but what to do?

what's so essential about a rear disc?

Most of my riding is through the equivalent of grinding paste. I'm starting to track disc brake pad wear vs vee brake replacement and anecdotally I would say there is a benefit of longer life when the braking surfaces are not being dunked in the goop.

Again, anecdotally, I would say hydraulic hoses are sealed from the crap, but brake cables are not and performance degrades.

Finally, the weak spot of the hydraulic disc appears to be limited to the caliper pistons jamming up when the crud gets in.

So overall I find discs more responsive, more reliable, more consistent wet or dry and go further between maintenance. Downside is maintenance can be a bit fiddly but a) I did a four year apprenticship working on this kind of stuff and b) shed time tinkering with this kind of stuff is a pleasure.
