I did a little canoeing years ago Jamie. Small Lochs and a few rivers, but not in the surf.
Had a couple of neighbours growing up who were sea canoeists, I remember the like rudders their boats had and the watertight lids on the decks.
I enjoyed it, especially the exploring around normally inaccessible areas and islands. But we never really got into it enough to try anything challenging. In fact i dont think bar a couple of times i had to abandon boat while upside down
