Gents,

does anybody know if its possible to replace the shaft of the stock spring-oil damper? I can't figure how to open the damper - maybe one shouldn't be able to?

Its an old one on an Amp Research B2 frame. It shows some pretty severe signs of abuse on one side and i've been asking myself if its worth the trouble to even try.

Thanks!

Re:

You can certainly open up the damper. Ideally you need the special vice block that allows you to clamp the body without damage, whilst you unscrew thr two parts.

No idea if you can get a replacement damper shaft, certainly not possible through amp anymore. I'm sure it's possible to replace it, though you may need someone to make one for you.

I need something done along the same lines for a risse shock. Need a new air shaft for it and may need to go down that route.

Re:

It's fairly straight forward, however you will need the special tool. It can be made by drilling a block with the right diameter hole and cutting the block in half to grip it in a vice.

This is only to remove the eyelet on the end. The endcap unscrews easily enough and you can pour whats left of the fluid out. With the eyelet off the shaft will just push out.

I am in the process of sorting out spares for AMP's and I do have most bits in my personal stash which I am using for the drawings for parts.

This is I believe a replacement stainless shaft for the rear shock, early ones were chrome plated alloy ones which once the coating is damaged wears easily.

PM me if you require any more help

Re:

Is that really a pic of a shock shaft? Might actually have one in a box actually, thought it was a tool to remove the pivots from the older forks with the c-clips?

Re:

Yep, it's missing the piston but that's on the old one and just needs swapping over.

Re:

Well who knew, not me. Appears I do have one of these in the spares box. Is it spare? I do have an amp shock on a litespeed frame....

I also have a spare risse shock which I believe should fit a B2, as I bought it for a mongoose amplifier long since departed.

Re:

Thanks for the quick responses guys, the information really helps!

@ishaw

i might be interrested in the Risse shock; HOWEVER i know a guy who imported a B2 Risse Shock for his Mongoose, assuming it would also fit his other frame, which ist an original Amp Research B2. He was quite pissed that the two frames had different shock-slot diameters! Both frames had the double dontube so he naturaly assumed they are same generation with identical geometry.

It would be great if you could measure the diameter of the Risse "rod" which goes into the frame at the lower end! If its 19 mm I'm interrested!

Re:

I'll measure it, but fairly confident it will fit. Some of the shocks were designed for use with a sleeve to allow them to be compatible with more frames and I guess cost Risse less to make.

Length is also a factor as I believe this changed over time. I'll send some measurements and pics later today.

Re:

Here you go. Looks to be 19mm. Length is 145mm from end to centre of eyelet, and 155mm end to end.
