Amazon (Rock Lobster) Build Quandry

Very cool! I reckon M737 is the way to go as per Claret's build, very clean looking, not too over expensive to source and it should work perfectly. there's no reason why you could not add some sneaky m739 v brakes if that's your bag, some suitable brake levers and seperate shifters either.

I had one of these for a bit which ended up with Makster on here, you won't be disappointed with it, it rode very nicely and had some very nice frame details, definitely a great budget Bonty alternative (and I own one of those..) It was from around '93 but I can't recall any frame number, I'm pretty sure the ones mentioned above are for Sadoff built frames only..

I think Yellow Judys, yellow Kore or Control Tech and the rest silver would look good and as above M737.

Gorgeous frame. Try and pick out a bit of yellow if you want but don't detract from the frame by making it too colourful!

Your first pic I took in my garden last year before splitting and selling the frame to Taffy, I will PM with all the history I have tomorrow!

Still undecided but think I will go down the M737 route. Problem is that it's gone up a fair bit in price since I last did a build with it (2010 I built a nice saracen kili with it).

Have now got a M737 rear mech en route, ritchey bar and stem. Will probably go with thumbies on friction to keep 8 speed or might just do 7 speed with it.

Still need some cranks and brakes. And a ritchey 27.0 seatpost.

And most importantly, time to make a start putting the pieces together!

Nice frames!
I've a 27mm controltech that I had fitted to my later 853 frame that I'll sell you if you're interested. Can be seen fitted in the build thread..... viewtopic.php?f=21&t=276898&hilit=lobster
My NTI frame snapped on me at the drop-out, so worth having a check around there for signs of cracking on the brazing.... viewtopic.php?f=6&t=153378&hilit=lobster

My favourite lobster build on here was Clarets. Mone was built up as a compromise to comfort, at it was then my main rider

Im going with thumbies on mine albeit DX ones....

Are you going with silver bar/stem/post?

Tony....

Yeah, all silver, will be getting a ritchey silver seatpost once I find one cheap enough. Got the bar coming, and have the stem already.

I have two sets of DX thumbies sat around, so will use them. Saves me a few quid buying new ones.

Have everything I think nearly, but holding out for specifics. That said, I might just build it with the DX cantis I have and a dx chainset, then change it to M737 XT when I have it. Always seem to overpay to get something built then find it cheaper a day after. It's going to be ridden so not too precious on being 100% correct, especially when they are off the peg frames anyway.

Will pm you about the seatpost but will probably hold out for a ritchey for now.

Will also check the frame once its down from the loft  didnt initially see any signs of damage but will double check. Would imagine yours must have had a fair bit of use to fail there, I have seen it on others but only when they have been heavily used, usually as commuters.

There's not a great deal of rock lobsters on here, especially pre 1997, but I do look at Clarets and yours on a daily basis at the moment. Keeps me going through the boring indecision of collecting parts. Mine will be one of the worst here, because I dont really care about it being 100% period, I take rubbish pictures and I'm getting it built quickly and cheaply to try it out. Will upgrade and tart up if it fits well and rides well. We'll have to wait and see on that!

Positive comments though, thank you!
