Amazing!!

Not grounded by the ash then

Chuffin' quick tho'....

Isn't the SR71 made mostly of titanium? I've sat in one of those in the Boeing museum - awsome.

Didn't Great Britain once push the boundaries of high speed air travel??

£38BN plus to be spent on defence this year yet we still rely on Nimrods, a derivitive of the Comet (the FIRST civilian jet airliner!!) for patroling our air/sea space.
But at least the people of Afghanistan can vote without being turned away at 10pm on election day!!

A tad faster than the Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird, my fave air machine! 8)

Was there an official top speed for that? I thought it was still classified?

Everything's been declassified. Here's a link to an online copy of the official Air Force flght manual. (caveat: it's a HUGE file, and the server craps out from overload sporadically).

SR-71 Flight Manual

Yes, the Blackbird had an unpainted ti body. Apparently, when cruising in the strato at over Mach 2.5, you could see the metal glowing red!

That website refuses to work - everywhere else states Mach 3.2+ as the top speed - I remember an expilot on tv a couple of years ago saying the mach numbers started getting "silly high" on a few flights but couldn't confirm what they actually were!!
