back on the subject of crappy jobs looking unsecure - i work for the RBS group - don't things will affect my division but am thinking of a career change anyway. does anyone have any advice on getting myself into the bike industry? - i'm thinking of taking the CYTECH courses off my own back.

Well at least I don't feel so bad about all my bikes being stolen, lots of you have got it tough on the job front
Well I can say that now is a damn good time to get into the bike industry! I work for 'one of the big boys' that you'll all know, and business is mental!
To get into the industry these days, CyTech is a must. It will massively increase your chances of actually getting a job, but it's so worth it from a personal point of view too, just knowing that you are capable and knowledgeable about the job you do does wonders.
Don't bother with level 3 just to get into the industry, it's quite specialised and unnecessary for most jobs, but level 1 is very basic stuff and not enough to work as a professional in my opinion. Do 1+2 and you'll be off to a good start.
Just don't expect to ever earn a fortune working for others in the industry. CyTech has pushed Mechanic's wages up recently, but it's very hard to find a job that breaks £20k, Sales jobs can be OK with commission if you are good (ruthless? :twisted: ) and can cope with the public!
There are definitely opportunities for setting up you own shop, just make sure you specialise and don't try to compete too much with big ranges and cheap prices. Singlespeed/fixed gear is a potentially big market at the moment! There could well be space for retro shops even, incorporating SS/fixed But only in the 'cool' areas (London etc.)!


OK, time for my moan; crashed my car on Christmas day last year and had to sell for peanuts, picked up glandular fever about February which completely destroyed me and my hopes of riding lots and competing this year, recovered about 2 months ago, still with dodgy knees from it. Starting to feel better about riding, for all my bikes to get nicked Shares in energy companies which shouldn't have too much trouble, but are, and FTSE based funds too :roll:
Not a houseowner, so I'm sorry to all those who are, but I'm looking forward to the market dropping like a stone!

Bring on Winter I say, too!

oooowww if we are having a moan ... Here goes!!

Last summer gave up a very well paid job ( 10 years + )
Gave everything up to start a new business with friend in Cornwall
Parents decided to join me down there and put there house on Market
Come home for Xmas
Dad starts to fall ill over Xmas
Dad diagnosed terminal in early Jan (straight into hospital for 6 weeks )
Decide not to return to Cornwall as only family driver
move back to family house to take on family duties
start losing everything ( work Van, race car etc etc )
try to juggle money & debts
Get declared bankrupt ( the choise between looking after my dad or going back to cornwall I am not ASHAMED )
So everyday my role is getting up and being the leaning post for 6 very close women of our family including Nan James ( 92 ) who lives with us too.
Dad is now offically never going to walk again so its the real deal caring role for me now ... He wiped my arse why not return the favour hey??

So is it really a moan ... Nope ... I look at it these are the cards we are delt and we must make the most of things and live with no regrets !! This year has changed my life everyway you can feel and I know its still going to get worse and ll I cant even wish for next summer as everyday counts!! :roll:

But when I get on that Bike ..... It all goes away!!!

Hope you are wrong and you have a much better year, makes me appreciate all I have got and I realise how lucky I am when I hear how things have panned out for you mate, you have a great outlook and attitude and I'm sure your da is very proud of you.

Yesterday my sister went to the docs for a checkup as was having blood cell troubles and they have found a lump in her celvic area :shock: until they can shift an infection they cannot investigate it further.... What the fu@k is going on here!!!

I have no parents to speak of - had no childhood as this was taken away by an abusive father.

My life re-started at around 17 - I dont consider myself a survivor or anything daft (just greatfull to wake up each morning without having to worry about the night before).

I think we all have our burdens to carry along, small or large like Daj, I have the greatest respect for anyone who can cope with the profoundly weird shit life has waiting in store for any one of us.



I now have a custard cream addiction on which I blame Pickle - it was easy form him to send his dealer round (his parents) and over supply me, thus making me an easy target for cheap bike purchases....
