Alien FD Cable Route

Can anyone post a good detail pic, or explain exactly how the front derailleur cable should be installed on the first year Alien?

It has a single bolt in the rear of the BB and no cable stop. I've read someone explain that there should be a pulley on the bolt, but that makes no sense to me w/o a stop for the cable somewhere above it.

I've seen a picture that appears to show a cable stop on the derailler arm, with perhaps the end of the cable anchored at the BB.

I've also seen someone route the cable under the BB and seem to have a stop installed at the bolt in the BB. This did not look to be proper to me.

I can't seem to find a catalog or any other good stock photo to detail the install...

Thanks

Here's another possibility (see pic below). I can also post pics of those other 2 ways you mentioned if you want.

A 4th possibility: I bought an 89 Alien new back in 89, and I cannot for the life of me remember how the cable was routed. I wasn't very bike-tech savvy at the time (I just knew that I wanted to ride the best I could afford), and I took it to a bike shop once to get something done, and they installed a clamp-on cable stop to route the cable around the pulley because they didn't remember how to put it back together once they got it apart. The clamp-on cable stop performed basically the same job as the mech clamp bolt pictured below.

I'm kicking myself for not taking detailed pics back when it was new. Ah, but what did I know back then; I was just a young punk. Now I'm just an old punk, and my original ride has been disassembled and stripped to bare metal and awaits my decision as to how best to rebuild it.

Best of luck to you.

Thanks!!!

I do like that solution better than most I've seen. That at least looks like it could be the original layout. Gonna have to dig a little to find hardware to duplicate that one .....

Anyone else know for sure?
