It would be more wise to have a sleeve inside the steerer to prevent the threaded portion from collapsing or sheering off.
Sounds like a good suggestion, but I'd have to remove the star nut, then I'm not sure whether it would be more difficult to put back in, depending on how thick the sleeve is. I'll look into it, but the cost of having a sleeve machined would probably be prohibitive.
I'm probably thinking 50% about the integrity, though it is unlikely it will get stressed even as much as it has previously, and 50% about avoiding damage from the threads to the inside of the stem.
