Aero levers, first introduced ?

How do you modify a non-aero lever then? I've had a set of aero and non-aero Shimano SLR levers before but the pull mechanism was different - front-to-back on the aero ones with the cable sheath pulling out the side, but up/down pull on the non-aero.

I had Dia Compe aero levers in 1983, in fact I am just now in the process of restoring said bike (531c Joe Waugh) and found a set of same period Dia Compe from Holland.

Need to find a suitable 7400 or 7100 series Dura Ace front mech as the original is past it's best. Then just a question of tyres (I have some period tubs for the CX18 sprint rims) for the wired ons, was thinking Challenge Criteriums?

On a Campag lever, I drilled small cable sized hole in the bottom of the inside rear at an angle through to a few millimetres above the handlebar. I then counterbored with a larger drill from the outside a short way as a stop for the outer cable. The cable route is not a lot different from normal and they seem to work OK. I'm sure this must have been the same method (or very similar) to Fignon's and Hinault's.
