I'm looking to build up a 1950 Holdsworth frame as a "usable" touring bike, I've got a 46/32 chainset but this is a bit before my time really, I quite like the idea of a rod change front, no idea on rears ! any knowledge/recommendations would be gratefully received

Re:

Check out Classic lightweights and also the V-CC library for ideas on parts used in 1950. Cyclo-Benelux were popular then.

I was using Cyclo Benelux in 1950, your chainwheel range would have been unusual, and too much for the Benelux. I was using 13 to 21 with 3 teeth difference on the front, but later had a 26 t rear which was just OK, still 3 teeth on the front. Had to bend the roller cage and arm so that it would get a bit closer to the wheel when on the bigger chainring.

Might be worth looking at some early post war Simplex catalogues,, more likely to find an old Simplex in France.

If you went with a (1956) Simplex Grand Touriste 303 (Hilary Stone has one)
http://www.hilarystone.com/CCderailleursrear.html
it would give you a large range.
'Overall capacity 30 teeth front and rear with a maximum obtainable range of 34 teeth. Maximum freewheel range, any combination from 14 to 24 teeth. Front not exceeding 20 teeth variation"
see V-CC library Simplex catalogue 1955-56 with price list

or possibly a 1952 Grand Tourisme
V-CC library - Simplex derailleur catalogue 1953
