Ed, as Russ has already said there are loads of very very good steel modern bikes out there, Cotic soul for 1, Birdman was riding 1 yesterday And a friend of mine has 1 too, awesome bikes.
Also i know what you think of suspension forks, but have you considered a 80mm with lockout. That way you could ride locked out until you felt you needed the added comfort :idea:

rite, frame-check, headset-check, wheels-check, forks-bugger. steerer tube is too short on the forks i had lined up, so im gonna drop the bits off at coombes in the week, but no forks im afraid. phil ahd a set of fox forks taht originally came on the bike, perhaps he would lend them to you short term, worth asking....
