I'm after a new pair of wheels for my old bike.

It's actually going to be a modern set that I can use on it with the aim to move it to another bike in the near future.

So I want a disc and rim brake wheelset.

Something like LX hubs with light rims (Xx 3/717's ?).

But I'm not sure of the quality of these rims, if they are light.. there weights seem heavier than the one's bits I used to get 400g rims, like araya RM395 or mavic231, and the even lighter but don't go over a bump ;) Mavic230's if I needed something cheap

Now I have no idea, araya doesn't seem to be around anymore and mavic seem to dominate everything.

So.. would LX Hubs, DT DB Comp & Mavic XM317 make a good light (and importantly cheap) wheelset, or would I be better going for the shimano Deore or LX wheelsets.
Deore 505 £76 @ merlin
LX M565 £95 @ merlin

or merlin custom build like
DT Comp S/S DB
XM317 Non Disc
XT Splined Disc

£114

There does not seem the LX or option for hub.

All advice on rims or even the difference between XM/XC/EX all mean in real terms (none of this freeride, aggressive stuff they sling around now). or even comparable rims from other places and I build them up myself.

Looked at the spec for them in the part replacements on Xero's site (halford have a % drop for buying online as well, seems it's made from some unknown brand stuff apart from the DT spokes).

Doesn't give the weight of them though.

If you want an off the peg wheel set I would recommend Mavic Crossrides every time. They are an unbelievable buy for the money.

If you are sticking with custom builds on Shimano Hubs I would not go lower than XT.
