Advice please P7 potential purchase

Spec-wise I think there was a choice of different groupsets that p7s of that era could be ordered with. Likely candidates would be shimano stx-rc, deore lx or xt. Suntour might have also been available for some oranges, but probably less so around the date of your p7. In truth owners would also have upgraded parts over the years anyway, so unless you are going for an "as it was from the shop/factory" build then I wouldn't be too worried about mixing and matching parts from different groupsets. Of course if you are going for a "from the shop" build then a full deore lx or xt groupset would be good.

Mine has a bit of a hotch-potch of parts on it from different groupsets (now all from roughly around the same period -i.e. within a couple of years around the frame's date - except in a few cases where a newer part offers a significant advantage).

p.s. the forks in above post would have been from a nickel plated p7 (i.e. they were nickel plated originally and its not something that has been added afterward). There's nothing to stop you getting them painted, as nickel plate can be painted over. My p7 was originally nickel plate but was so badly worn that I had it all stove enamelled in silver paint.

p.p.s...you might want to look in the magazine/catalogue scan section and see if you can find any old info about specs at that time.

Orange P7's were manufactured in Nickel, I don't think the guy selling them hasn't done it himself.

Nickel plating is a chemical process, so I'd imagine to remove it you could soak the forks in a load of acetone for a few hours... Rather you than me, it's a solvent - really nasty stuff!

Good score  I'd go Pace RC36 for the forks and Shimano M737/9 for the group set. Add a touch of Syncros/Control Tech/Flite/Mavic, cook for 30 mins and your done. 8)

You wouldn't need to remove the nickel plating (see above).

You learn something new everyday! If that's true, then snap those forks up...
