Looking at getting a child seat for a 2 and 3 year old to attach to our bikes. I have seen some seats that attach to the seat post with a full seat on the back. Has anyone used this type of seat for their kid or can anyone recommend a type of seat? The seats have a weight limit of 22kg which I guess is the weight of an average four to five year I guess? :?
Any guidance much appreciated.

A seat would definitely be a good place to start.

..or some very long cable ties

(sorry, couldn't resist)

I suggest you also have a look at trailers. I found the handling of a bike with a seat on the back to be really horrible, and getting a child on and off unaided to be hard.

We had a Burley Bee for 3 years. The kids are kept warm and dry in all weathers, can have toys and snacks inside and can last longer rides. It also leaves the bike unchanged, clamping onto the rear triangle.

I found like Hamster the bike handled like a pig with a rear seat, if you don't want a trailer fitted I found the top tube or cross bar seats were the best.
I made mine with a kids seat and bolted on some foot rests, my son held the middle of the handle bar which he was chuffed with cos he felt like he was steering the bike. 20 years on these setups are now available to buy over the counter.

i used a hamax kiss for my last one ,well still do really but at 4 and a half im probably at its limit, and as said the bike handles like a b***h, esepcially the bigger he has got. would recommend them though ,good quality and not too expensive.
they take a while to get used to as the bike handles very differently, but you do get used to this, there is something lovely about having your child on the back also,

oh build em up slowly on it, and watch out for the bumps, this unsettled my last one for a while, but then he was on it from about age 2, he loves the bumps now and is fearless

the riclining ones are good too, coz the bike makes the little beggars go to sleep

I have seen people attaching them to the seatpost, but im sure this is not recommended, your better off securing them to the seat tube.

hope that helps a little

The only problem I found with the seatpost seats is that it's quite easy to kick your young'un in the face when dismounting. And that gets you into all sorts of trouble with your wife...

problem with a seat if that its connected to your bike and unless the mrs has long legs? your the donkey! go for the trailer a much better option as it can be swapped from bike to bike easily and if the mrs wants to go out with out you she can :) plus you can load it up with all the food for the picnic :) but make sure you use child proof tubs! our youngest used to raid the hamper then fall asleep before we got to the picnic area
