Hi folks,

Currently considering converting a road frame into a cx one. If there's enough clearance for the tyres, I may get some canti bosses brazed on.
What I'd like to know then, is how deep and wide are cx tyres when fitted? Are manufacturers widths accurate?
Thanks for any help

Unless it's got massive (touring tyres + mudguard sized) clearance, any worthwhile CX tyre will either catch on the chain stay bridge, the insides of the chain stays or the (caliper) brake bridge. Or all three.
Unless you want to run 28mm CX tyres, which to be frank are useless for 99% of CX type events. And even 28s will catch on most road frames.

FWIW any decent/racey CX tyre will be fairly close to UCI rulebook dimensions, 33mm wide.

Anything not aimed at racing will be as vague and dependant on rim width as an MTB tyre.

Another option is a 27" frame, that might give you more clearance

Cheers Matt,

I've decided to take a punt on a steel cx frameset now. Been offered a real bargain, and would also be a shame to mess about with my Jackson road bike.
