Cheeeers.... what do I do with the star shaped thing stuck in there?
Slice the tube and replace the thing?

There's already a couple of spacers betwixt stem and top bearing cup doodah (jeeeez I haven't a clue what all these things are called  )

Aim to have it up and pedalling next week... going to be looking (next wekk) for crankset, front and rear mechs and a chain.. (LX or higher and cheap as chips (obviously ;) )

If you can find a suitable improvised tool, you can tap the star-fangled nut (yes, it's really called that) further down the steerer and then cut the top off. You want the top of the steerer about 2mm below the top of the stem or spacers, if you have a spacer on top.

If you think it's a good idea to cut the steerer so soon, you just put the top cap bolt into the star fangled nut and hammer it further down until it's further down than where you want to cut. Obviously you need to keep the bolt in line with the steerer, or it means you've gone crooked.

An alternative is to leave the steerer as it is until you've ridden the bike and you're sure you are happy with the handlebar height. There's nothing wrong with having stackers above the stem until you're sure what you want to do. If you want more than c25mm of stackers under the stem though, it does begin to look a bit much.

It's the bit of the headset that's in the frame that's called a cup. The thing that presses down onto the bearings is called a race.

Getting there...

It's all bolted up loose, Wife will decide everythings final resting place..
Waiting for cables, XT rear mech and Chainset (choice of black Bontrager or polished XT.. not sure which yet - will decide when they arrive)..

Did you ever get to finish this fella? Just seen your thread re Halfords and had forgotten all about this. I really like Voodoo bikes.

Not finished I don't think but getting there..

Added Avid 2's, 36T ring, Rhythm Pro seat, braided look cables and RaceFace Deus headset

The cables are going to be changed this week (need to get some of that tube to go over the exposed bits then I'll crack on), she could do with a different seat too I think (although that Rhythm Pro isn't too bad for her) and I may whip a link or 2 from that chain..
Hopefully Gil will sort the stickers for me in a few months too.. just need toptube and downtube to tidy it up.

Pics aren't great . . .

Looking good. So on your 1 x 8 set up do you not need any sort of chain guide around the bottom bracket?

Not so far, but she's not ridden it much . . the front ring is unramped etc, not sure if that helps..

Need to fiddle with the shifting a little, can't get it on the big ring at the back . . will do that when the new cables go on ;)

I rather like the way it's looking.. once the kids are back at school we'll be out a lot more ..
