97 Kona Cindercone

Ok, old school it is then! (would probably be a crime to do a modern build on such a classic frame)

Seen some great stuff on eBay, Middleburn, Hope, Mavic........ I will admit though, modern gearing and brakes are so much better and as I'll be riding this bike rather than looking at it I want it to perform as well as possible. Apart from the mechs, shifters, brakes, I'll try to keep to ca.97-99 parts.

Forkwise I'm leaning toward 97-99 SID's at the moment. Any thoughts/advice?

Cheers?

PS: If you have any gear for sale that would be good for this build please let me know

Personally think Z2 Bombers suit a 97 Cinder Cone better than early SIDs, but if you go for SIDs the earliest ones had 63mm travel and would be perfect geometry-wise, later ones were 80mm, but you can put a spacer in to reduce it to 63 if you want.

I think they do bb-mounted front mechs now that don't need a braze-on to bolt them to the seat tube. Can't say I like the sound of them, but I guess they must work.

I've always liked the colour scheme of the 97 Cinder Cone, the yellow decals are perfect with the bright blue paint.

Yeah, Bombers were cool forks. But way heavy.

I ran 80mm Manitou's on my 94 (ish) Cindercone with no problems. The bike had amazing handling. Not keen on Marzocchi's really.

True about the original colour scheme, Im still undecided on the blue or a more modern white.

The thing I love about Bombers is that they are just so robust and almost maintenance-free.

While they are not the lightest, this is also stopping then squirming like so many others of that time. Too many seemed built only to a target weight and too bendy as a result.

Maybe on the front yes. For the back im not sure, unless theres someone who can braze on mounts and a small strut between seat and chainstays for strength?

Disk mounts:

Is this feasible and if so where can I get it done?

Just found some brand new 97 'Real' hubs in silver.

I recall the brand but have no idea if thyre any good or what they cost when new?

Any ideas?

I sold a 98 Explosif to a chap who had disc mounts welded on it. Someone in Leeds did it, but got the alignment wrong plus they won't warranty it unless a respray is also undertaken.
Messed it right up in my opinion and might have been better off just getting a newer 853 frame if that's what they wanted.

Marzocchi (Marathon?) Air forks????

What was the name of the XC Race/Lightweight Air sprung fork Marzocchi did in the late ninties? It came out a couple of years after RS released the first SID and was supposed to be a direct rival to the SID???

I think it was called Marathon, remember seeing one in white in MBUK BiTD.

Might be the ideal fork for the C'Cone.
