I've got a 1996 tecnos decor frame and forks and see that it has a campagnolo sticker on it in gold that matches the columbus sticker colour so I'm guessing it came on the bike and not a later addition. In '96 what was the (pecking) order for Campy stuff, I know chorus then C- record were the top two but were they about in '96 ? when I look on velobase it seems those ranges had stopped? if not what was the upper range then ?

Thanks !

Top of the range in 96 was just called Record. I think it was the last year it was 8-speed but I think it had already got the titanium upgrade.

Then Chorus, followed by Athena, Veloce, Mirage and I think Xenon.

1996 Campy pecking order was:

Record
Chorus
Athena
Veloce
Mirage
Avanti

Campy also had the Speed TH a triathlon group which consisted of bar end shifters and a crankset

Xenon didnt come till 2003 along with Centaur (by which time Athena, Avanti, Veloce and Daytona were no longer in the line up)

xenon return

fear to be a pedant, but the xenon brand here was a reappearance - i remember Deeside Cycles selling old Xenon mechs for £20 out back of comic circa 93/94. Think Avanti replaced Xenon until we all got used to it being awful so the names swapped again. Where i get confused is the Athena/Centaur/Daytona story ;)

Daytona replaced Athena and then was renamed Centaur following a trademark dispute. (Centaur was previously used on one of the MTB groups) Athena was then reintroduced 3 years ago slotting between Centaur and Chorus a the low-end 11 speed group...confusing eh?

copywrite

Ah, cool - so was it the Daytona brand that was copywrited? Having Athena and Centaur is a little like having record and super record. I guess its only a matter of time before the squeeze a c-record in there too...
And has veloce replaced mirage in terms of quality, or has the bottom groupo just disappeared?

Yes, Veloce is now bottom of the hierarchy - Mirage and previously Avanti/ Xenon were dropped as they are no longer chasing the OEM bike mass market and focussed on the mid-high range only.
