I use a SRAM 9sp chain on 8sp drivetrain, runs perfectly.
It's only the outside plate/pin measurements that are different, the internal/roller are the same as every other chain (except for some of the 11sp stuff I think) as of course the majority of sprockets are all the same 3/32 standard.
I've ran 9sp chains on everything between 5sp to 9sp drivetrains and they've all shifted perfectly.
Dushan Ivekich - I missed your post and the advice is most valuable - thank you so much for your feedback. I now feel safe buying a 9 speed chain so thanks also to everyone else who contributed their experiences.
I have done the same and its fine. However I do find that 9 speed chains seem to wear quicker. Dunno why, I use good ones whereas I use 4 quid ones from Asda in 8 speed.
It will work fine although I would wonder about any advantages. Weight? Grams, looks ? buy a pretty 8 speeder.
Now I wonder if those 8 seed Campag cassettes were "funny" . I have one that isn't normal and is fussy about chains. Just to add to the info really.
Wippermann Connex 808 - nice shiny nickel-plated offering. Although their less glamorous browny-grey 800 will do the same job equally well, just without the "wow" factor.
