80s Mino Denti Master

Hi all. Time for the next project.
Back in the winter I got hold of this beautiful Mino Denti frame as a complete build from an LFGSS seller.

There is limited information available on Denti frames, but I've had a hankering for one for a while as they have lots of lovely features, crimped tubing, pantographed details, curved seat tubes and gussets galore! This Master (presumably Denti's answer to the Colnago Master?) has a scoop on the seat tube for tight/aero rear wheel placement, crimped tubes, a very elegant slim fork and chromed head lugs. As far as I have been able to find out this is a mid 80s frame, probably 1985-87. I know Denti was an ex-pro, turned framebuilder after a crash, and was roughly contemporary with Colnago. Anyone with more information on Mino Denti and his framebuilding work please get in touch if you know more! The bottom bracket is marked .723 if that means anything.

There were several components I wanted to change from the bike as I received it and I thought the paint and chrome needed some attention so I decided to completely strip it and see what reasonably sympathetic improvements could be made. This is going to be a longish project but I hope you enjoy the ride...

The frame is in generally pretty good condition, fork excellent with minor rust spots and grime under the crown. The paint scheme is dead 80s with a lovely pearl white base and fishnet-masked blue fade over the top. The major issues that needed sorting were the paint loss around the bottom bracket, and seat cluster, general paint chips and some rust spots on the chrome lugs. Some of the decals are original as far as I can tell, but the larger down tube and seat tube decals are definitely repros as they have been fitted over some of the paint chips! I considered leaving the paint as is but it was just too ugly to put up with. Sorry to the original paint purists amongst us. ;)

I have a full decal set, including the correct Columbus tubing stickers (my research leads me to believe that these frames used Columbus SL badged up 'Denti').

First job was to remove those decals that needed replacing. It was pretty time consuming as they were old and gummy, coming off in shreds rather than neatly peeling.

I left the head tube logo and the 'MASTER' text as my replacements didn't quite match the font and these were in good condition.

Then onto planning what to do with the paint damage.

After investigating the BB area further I found the paint in quite poor condition, flaking away from the bottom bracket casting with the touch of a fingertip. The main issue is the chroming includes the BB which has been keyed but clearly the paint adhesion was very poor from the factory. Some surface rust on the chrome was also hiding under the worst affected areas of the paint

Yuck!😣

More soon.

Definitely needs a complete respray but looks like a nice frame you have there...

To start with I cleaned up the fork, removing the old paint and damaged tubing decals.

They are finished with a quick paint fill on the little panto ladybirds - Denti's family crest I believe.

I decided to take a slightly unorthodox approach to this, with the front half of the frame paint being reasonably good, along with the blue fishnet fade being a challenge to replicate, the answer seemed to be to only paint the rear triangle/seat tube. I masked off up the BB and seat cluster lugs. I also masked the chrome at this stage. Next, after removing all the rust and tidying inside the frame, I used 3M sanding pads to smooth out the remaining paint around the damaged areas and keyed the rest of the surfaces

I then applied an etch primer and a couple of coats of filler primer, sanding between each stage to level and smooth the surface.

Next will be the white base coat, then a pearl to match the original, followed by a final lacquer coat or two.

Nice frame, and good job on the touch ups.

I've got a Denti, a Road Tech Five, Columbus SL, that I've kitted out with 10 speed groupset. Mine's not as fancy as yours but it has some lovely spear point lugs, fast back seat stays and rides great.

Denti's seem pretty few and far between, I've never actually seen another out on the road. You can buy ladybird Denti bar end plugs on eBay if you are interested.

They also seemed to make a lot of clothing, often for others, as I've come across much more Denti branded clothing than I have bikes.

Nice bike! I think I came across it when doing research into the brand. Great build too, just my cup of tea. I actually have a Record 10s group I thought about putting on this but I think am sticking with most of the Dura-Ace 7400 group the frame came with to keep it a little more in period as it won't be a daily ride.
Thanks for the bar plug tip, tempting!

I have been watching out online for a while for them and they don't come up for sale much, at least here in the UK. Having said that this rather unusual example with a Softride beam just popped up on eBay a few days ago!

I love weird beam bikes and this is definitely a rare Denti. Bit rich for my budget though. ;)

I sprayed up a couple of samples, then after getting the primer layers flat, sprayed the white base on the frame then a pearl coat over the top (Specialist Paints Pearl Silver; https://www.specialistpaints.com/products/pearl-paint?variant=14245216903).

Checking the sample...

Then go!

Very happy with the finish match. Next was demasking then hand painting in the little bits of lug detailing and panto paint fills in black.

Next up is touching in any scrapes in the blue and polishing up the chrome. ☺️

Hi all, just starting the build on this and realised I'd never shown the finished frame. See below!

This is the paint finished barring a quick whip round with a scalpel.

Next the decals had to go back on;

Lots of painstaking work getting it to this stage but I am very happy with it given the state the paint was in.

Build to come over the next month or two, ready for some sunny spring riding - watch this space!
