6 speed Suntour cassette question

I've a few suntour cassettes in my stash. Not sure if this is viable of not but some of them are 7 speed with the last two cogs the lock ring, others are 7 speed with the last cog as the lock ring. Is it possible to use the 5 cogs from one with the double cog lock ring version with the single cog lock ring to make a 6 speed cassette?
Interesting, I hadn't noticed the double sprocket locking ring on some 7spd cassettes. I guess I'll have keep to singles.

I'm assuming that the cassette can be deconstructed like a Shimano one i.e. there are a few bolts at the back which can be undone. Is that right?

Not quite. I think there are pins rather than screws but I'd guess you could knock them through/out.

Re:

Bought the two cassettes and as far as I can tell (shite vernier) the spockets are the same thickness but the spacers are different (as expected).

The three supporting pins came out pretty easily and after a bit of surgery I've come up with a 13, 15, 18, 20, 24 & 28T 6 speed cassette :D .

Re:

One slight concern.

Will the 7spd shifters I have work with the 6spd cassette? The spacing is different...

I'd have thought you'd need 6 speed shifters? If you have 7 speed shifters why not use the 7 speed cassette?

Re:

Finding XC9000 stuff is a long and protracted process!

The frame has a 130mm OLD which fits the 6spd hub. However, I've yet to find some 6spd shifters, so I was planning on using them until/if some 6spds turn up.
