1997 Hei Hei

Hello,

One of the materials/bikes that always called my attention was titanium and the too expensive for a student Hei Hei. Not too long ago I got one with equipped with "modernish" parts that I even took to a couple of races last year. But, not seeing too much use use these past months, I wanted to dress it as it was sold back in 1997:

So I stripped and cleant the frame down to the BB thread, and it is in great shape with no dings, dents, nor chainsuck, and I will start to fit it with its catalog specs, although I will probably have to settle with a couple of different hard to find pieces. Right now I will keep the CK headset while I look for the Diacompe ATC headset of which I don´t know what the ATC stands for... :P

I am excited to see this progress. Really nice stance/geometry in its original configuration.
Keep it coming !

Re:

Nice start David, look forward to seeing more :)

good start - that frames are classy.

in my opinion the Bomber Z1 looks wrong for that frame - at least in the brochure - does they change the geometry on production frames to take 100 mm forks ? Otherwise a Bomber Z2 should be the propper one.

Thank you all very much!

Somehow I thought more or less the same, but I guess I will try and see how the Z1 feels (up until now I was using a 2004 World Cup carbon SID with, IIRC, 80mm). Oddly enough, in another classic mystery, the same catalog specs Z2 for the Ku and the Hot models but their pictures show Judys XC version 1 even with canti bridges?...

Re:

This is going to look great when it's done David.

That was my first thought on the Z1, surprised that was factory spec.

Will be interesting to see hear what the ride is like with them up front :-)

the 97 brochure was printed somewhere in 96. I guess at that time Kona marketing was not quite sure what specs. their bikes will get in the end, or even they did not get enough components from their suppliers (in that case Marz.), so they had to put random parts onto their bikes for the brochure. That could be the reason why a Rock Shox Judy is displayed on the KU/HOT,...
Main supplier for forks that years had been Marz.

Anyway I still believe that the Z1 isn't the right choice for a CX rig like the HeiHei. BITD 100mm of travel rated a bike as a FR modell, which the HeiHei isn't :?

But I'm also interested to see how it will behave with the Z1 - the open bath damped / coil sprung Z1 on its own was a milestone in fork technology.

We´ll see... In any case it will be a rider with almost no NOS items...

That would probably be what happened back then :) . In fact, the only other Z1 spec´d bike of that year´s catalog is the King Kikapu FS (where it states that its Z1 is "The king of DH forks" :P ). Anyway, let´s try the Z1 and see. In any case, if it feels too high, I casually have a good condition white Z2 with a CK headset race that I could swap in no time

Doesn´t look to bad with the Z1 and the CK headset (even if it is not the DiaCompe):
