Just been looking at a 1997 GT Ricochet. Is the frame the same as the Avalanche? Will it be a pretty light frame? Just struggling to find a Zaskar in a 16" and thought this may be a good second best?

I think they were both double butted 4130?

Have you looked for a Richter 8? Built from the lovely Prestige tubes. Still an average riding frame though!!

4130 Al...? That'd be Cro-mo.

The Avalanche, Ricochet, Backwoods, Tempest, Arrowhead and Terramoto are all made from 7000 series aluminium alloy.
In 97 I think that the Avalanche and Avalanche LE both had a slightly newer and different design than models lower down the range.
I suspect that the 1996 frame design was probably used on these lower end bikes.

The 97 catalogue in the archive shows a different headtube gusset arrangements between some models.

I suspect they are all the 7000 series frames are very similar though. Perhaps the Avalanche had a bit more internal butting and a lower weight... but I can't really be sure.

Having looked more closely at the catalogue, and with the help of Google translator, it would appear that there are a few differences.

The Avalanche and Avalanche LE are both listed as having double butted 7000 series frames.
The Terramoto has a butted 7000 series frame.
However the Ricochet, Backwoods, Arrowhead and Tempest are simply listed as having heat treated 7000 series frames, with no mention of any butting.

Personally, I'd wait for a Zaskar as in direct comparison, a Zaskar wins, the Avalanche I had was a bit shit...

I think I may be finally losing my mind!

When did they start making them out of 7005 then? They were Cro-mo??

I'm going for a lye down.

1993. The start of a slippery slope.

Thank God I'm not going nuts :D

93? Blimey!

I'd wait for a Zaskar also.

I love GT bikes but Zaskar's and Xizang's hold special places. Even considering letting go of my Cro-Mo Karakorum K2 since the bits would be better used on a Zaskar.

I'll never do it of course... but the thought has crossed my mind.
