1994 P7 build thread

I make no bones about the fact that this thread may not get updated that often. I'm not exactly knowledgeable when it comes to completely stripping down a bike.

How it started off - I might have a spare, retro front wheel in the shed somewhere, but the rear i know has gone to the tip.

I've already embarrassed myself by trying to work out how big a BB to buy and measuring the wrong bit. Oops.

But as I've now stripped the bike down and started buying bits I figure I may as well keep a record.

First off. Bit of a clean up of the rear mech.

Thanks to advice from others I've now found out what it is. XTR RD900.

Probably needs new jockey wheels, but I've reassembled it as is for now. Trying to keep costs down so if it's a bit rough then I'll change them.

Front mech cleaned and degreased and regreased.

Now you can actual activate with your hands whereas it wouldn't move at all before.

They're on the replacement list.

I won't have any Hope stuff on this bike as I can't afford it, but I think some Hope jockey wheels might be a little treat for it.

Time for the crank arms...

Started off looking like this:

With just a degrease and some autosol, they came up pretty good, but lots of heel strike on them.

I was quite happy with them compared to how they started, then I saw the thread about the guy who'd polished his Middleburn cranks, and decided that mine were being put to shame. So I got the Wet or dry out. I could only get as high as 600 grit in Homebase, but I think they've come up pretty well.

Brakes didn't need too much cleaning.

But the grips did.

Oh. And unfortunately, the only bit of PACE the bike had is going to have to go.

I could hear the Jaws music playing as I started to clean, before deciding it wasn't worth it.

Just started taking the lacquer off the frame yesterday too.

Front brakes are XT Cantis. Anyone know a model number? Again, these were on the bike when I got it in 96, so would have been a year or so old by then.

Before and after

Rears before cleaning. Now these always bugged me. Not because they're LX and not XT, but because they're black.

To me, the shape looks identical. Could I rub down the paint and polish them to match the fronts?
